Boys of Spring
The Roadrunner's baseball teams is beginning a new season, looking to build off their 2-0 finish in last year's playoffs. But it doesn't seem that they are not coming out so strong in the beginning of the season.
Coach Ferro is looking forward to working with his playoff-experienced team this season. His team finished first in the Golden Valley Conference with an overall record of 28-14-1 but got knocked out early in playoffs. "The team was inexperienced last season so the returners will now know what to expect in the playoffs," said Coach Ferro.
The Roadrunners have two returning pitchers that played on the All-Nor-Cal team last year. Derrick Miramontes who started in 15 games and had a 10-3 record last season. The closing pitcher Anthony Welz, is also returning this year after finishing last season with 10 saves.
The pitching rotation is going to contribute a lot to this team led by Derrick Miramontes. A right-handed freshmen pitcher from Willows High school Mike Gleason, and a right-handed sophomore pitcher Garret Hamilton. Then a strong closer, right handed Anthony Welz.
There are a number of players that are contributing to the team's offense. Leading the team in hits last season was 1st baseman, Curtis Eubanks, who had a .364 average with 55 hits last season. Following close behind was outfielder Chris Cooper who had a .307 batting average and 33 RBI. Contributing to the offense is outfielder Brent Etchepar who finished 9th in the state with 28 stolen bases.
The Roadrunners are off to a slow start this season with a beginning record of 2-4. "We have gone up against two top teams in California Fresno and San Jose so this doesn't mean anything" said Coach Ferro.
The team was 0-3 until Feb. 2 when they got their first win of the season against Diablo Valley, with a score of 3-1 and beating them the next day 1-0 giving them a record of 2-4. Although the team is having a lousy start, it shouldn't be an indication of how the team is going to do. Last year during this time the Roadrunners had a record of 3-4 but played an easier first couple of games. Right now the baseball team is 4-5
A player on the team said "We aren't starting off hot, but we will get there. We are a good team." Many people are expecting a good season from this team. The team has two pitchers that were All-Nor-Cal returning this season, one to start the game and one to finish the game. They also have four returners who were All-GVC last season.
A mix of players like this is definitely a recipe for a playoff bound team. With half the team being returners and going 0-2 in the playoffs last season, the team is probably going to be looking for redemption in the playoffs. "We were inexperienced last year since it was our first playoffs in nine years" Said Couch Ferro.
