Unpardonable Interuption

As the new sports editor I have learned that my main responsibility is writing a column. When I took this position I thought, how cool is that? I have been playing baseball for 15 years, and now I get to write about it.

This is the first column I have ever written, so why not sit down and write about baseball, the only thing I'm most comfortable with.

It really hit me when the editor called me out of the blue tonight and asked me how far I had gotten with my stories. I didn't have much done so of course I said I was well on the way to getting everything completed. Today my advisor told me "when you come to class next week I want you to tell me you have gotten somewhere on your baseball story even if you haven't. I will be happy even if it's a lie".

So here I am, stuck. Wondering what I should write the rest of this column about. Maybe I should write about one of my many heroes, George Solomon. Solomon used to be the sports editor for the Washington Post and is now working for ESPN as the Ombudsmen. I strive to become like Solomon just because of his job title Ombudsman. Ombudsman was a title in the Swedish parliament; it's someone who represents the public by investigating and addressing complaints reported by individual citizens.
The first semester of the school year I wrote for the newspaper, I found myself excited about it. What is there to be excited about when you are writing about a football team that loses more than two-thirds of its games? The thing that makes you look forward to sports, even if the team lets you down, is winning, losing, and hope.

There are two things that can ultimately happen if you are playing or watching a sport: Your team wins or loses (ties are pretty much a thing of the past). How exciting is it when your favorite football team wins the super bowl, or how bad does it feel when your basketball team loses in the first round of the playoffs. But why do we come back to sports? The hope that next year your team will come back and win it all, unlike they did the year before, is reason enough.
So let's take a look at what Butte's athletes did for us last semester. The football team didn't even realize there were playoffs this year. The volleyball team was 14-13. The men's basketball team was 8-11 last time I checked. Even though the men's basketball team's season isn't going very well, give it up for the women, going 17-7 as of Jan 27.

Now let's take a brief preview of what's coming up for us this second semester. Last year the baseball team lost in the second round of the playoffs. Go check out the team this year. It will put on a show for you. The softball team is looking for a couple fans in the bleachers so the player can show off their skills. Also, the women's basketball team is going to the playoffs.

Even if you can't support a team by going to its games, pick up the recent edition of The Roadrunner and find out some of the scores, or how the team is doing. This way you can talk about the sport to with your friends. You will support the team even by doing that.
